Waltham City Councilor and state Representative Thomas Stanley has announced that he plans to run for mayor this fall.
“My vision for Waltham has our city reaching its full potential,” Stanley said in his announcement. He cited modernizing city government, shepherding the process to come up with a Fernald Developmental Center reuse plan, and emphasizing downtown development as key areas of focus for him.
The incumbent mayor, Jeannette McCarthy, has told the Globe that she will be running for reelection.
Stanley would step down from his position in the Legislature if he wins the city’s top job, a representative from his campaign said.
A primary election, if there are more than two candidates, would be held Sept. 22; the top two vote-getters would face off in the general election on Nov. 3, according to the city clerk’s office. It will begin accepting candidacy papers in May.
