UMASS Field Station

The University of Massachusetts (UMASS) wants to create a Center for Urban Sustainability at the site of the former UMass Suburban Experiment Station on Beaver Street in Waltham. The 58-acre site has the opportunity to become a cultural and natural resource for residents of Waltham and visitors from around the state.

To preserve the Waltham farm and food co-op and promote urban sustainability, Rep. Stanley hosted a State House meeting with UMass officials and local farm owners, along with environmental and sustainability advocates to discuss UMASS’s interests and plans. He also testified before the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture urging Members to fund the project through the 2013 Massachusetts Environmental Bond Bill. In March of 2014, $20 million was earmarked for this project and approved in the bond bill. In June of 2014, Rep. Stanley and Rep. Lawn fought to restore the $20 million which was cut from the bill.
